Match Report

Steelers 0 v 8 Sacriston CC

Well we have many thanks to offer Sacriston CC for stepping into the breach that was left by Annfield Plain Demi. To find out at 20.00 on Saturday night that the Demi were pulling out of the friendly could have left the Steelers without a game but fortunately my good friend Paul Bladen managed to contact Ritchy Hilton and between them they managed to secure their side at late notice so by 21.00 a game was back on.

Paul was unsure was sort of side they could put out at late notice but on the day they proved to be far better than us by a long chalk.

The game kicked off with both sides sharing the play but it was evident at an early stage that the visitors were up for this game and ready to take no prisoners with the favours stopping right there.

I must admit that the blue of Sacriston administered to us our biggest ever defeat and left me with the blues for the remainder of the day. Our lass couldn’t understand why I was down and very subdued but then again she has never witnessed the after affects of such a dramatic defeat.

Hats off to the local boys from up the bank as they approached this match with attitude, enthusiasm and the will to win. The bragging rights sit firmly at their door and we will need some time to recover from this upset.

If the first goal did not set them on their way the second one most certainly did as it was played directly to the visiting forward by our keeper as he tried to play the ball out. Errors like this happen from time to time and he wasn’t the only one to make one on the day. The main thing we have to take from the game is how we can learn from our mistakes.

I apologise to the visitors if I cannot recall much about the goals from there on in as my mind was racing quicker than a Morris Dancer with Saint Vitus Dance. It either became a blur or my mind deliberately decided to block any unwanted information as a form of protection.

Gareth Sharp headed a ball over the side fencing during the second half and after the game I ventured over after my first pint searching for this ball as we could not find it at the time. All along he must have known how I was feeling and this ploy to get me in the thick stuff after the game certainly worked. After 20 minutes with a plastic machete I was still ball less but the nettle stings I had over arms and legs had a soothing affect as the pain from these helped take my mind off the devastating defeat. Cheers Gareth, you have always had a great sense of compassion.

Sacriston were immense on the day and local friendship did not deter these lads from easing off the pedal. I think Ritchy must have them on goal bonus as they won 13-0 the week before.

Gary Draper was my choice of man of the match and Ritchy voted new signing Richard Mundell as Steelers choice.

I cannot gloss over the result today but I will try and finish on a positive note. We came through today’s encounter with only one minor injury. I only lost 1 ball in the rough and probably should have only brought 1 ball today. I went home on time for my dinner and the 3 new lads seem to be settling in very nicely.

Our next match is home to New Brancepeth WMC this coming Thursday so we have little time to dwell on this.
