Match Report

Steelers 2 v 3 Chesters

Craig Mountain managed to get back for this game after missing last weeks encounter and found himself catapulted straight into the starting 11 through the non attendance of Liam Bowes. He capitalised on this good fortune by scoring his 3rd goal of the year and getting my nod for man of the match, his first of the season. His headed goal in the 7th minute came from a Craig Thompson corner that was headed back into his path by Kieron Moralee.

This early start, so similar to last week’s game was not enough to see us through and take all 3 points. The visitors equalised approximately 28 minutes into the game from a corner and then scored a second on 39 minutes to go into the halftime break ahead.

Long before the half time whistle came we lost a very influential player when Michael Nichol had to withdraw from the game with blurred vision following a clash of heads. Chesters have been a bit of a thorn this year as we have lost 3-2 in both games within 2 weeks and seen early withdrawals through injury with the biggest loss being our keeper who will be missing until the New Year.

Still, heads did not drop and just like the match 2 weeks ago we didn’t loose the second half of the game but a one all draw during the latter 45 was not enough to give us any points.

Craig Thompson put the Steelers on an equal footing early in this second period. Liam Burn had worked the ball into his favour on the right flank and the ball into the middle that he supplied was dummied by Ben Harris, leaving Craig to fire past the keeper and into the net from 15 yards.

We had played 4-4-2 up until the middle substitution on 68 minutes when I changed our shape to 3-5-2. This had some bearing on the visitors winning goal as they seemed to take advantage of the space on our left side.

As much as the lads tried for the remaining 20 minutes we just couldn’t find a third goal to level the sides once more. The closest we came to scoring a goal was when Liam Burn hit the post with a ferocious shot from 20 yards out.

Kieron Moralee received MOM from the opposition to coincide with Craig Mountain’s award from me.

This may sound like an old cliché but we have 2 very important games within in the next 2 weeks and both of them are at home. This coming Sunday we have Washington Chevies and although our last encounter about a month ago was a very close affair we will be looking to get something out of this match and improve our home record.
